A question of litter trays

November 4, 2019

Having had a variety of bunnies with different health issues and toilet habits, over the last 20 years I’ve purchased an inordinate amount of different size and shape litter trays. My 2 gorgeous, 9-years-young bunnies DaisyDoe – barely 1Kg mini lop, and her buddy Enry – a chunky 3Kg lop cross have very different needs. Daisy has severe arthritic problems – being treated with Cartrophen injections (which helps her cystitis too), pain meds and acupuncture sessions. Most of her problems are down to an irresponsible breeder (from which she was rescued at 4 years) not treating a broken back leg / hip. Getting in and out of a standard litter tray for her would be impossible. Enry on the other hand can be rather errant with his aim (sound familiar?)… thinks nothing of hanging over the edge. Fortunately there’s a solution that fits them both.

Some years ago I was hunting for a low entry tray that could fit two ageing bunnies – one with a penchant for sleeping in the tray and by accident landed on large garden potting trays. I haven’t looked back. The trays have a high back, low entry and can easily take at least two big bunnies, or as in this case, my ancient little and large ones.

The trays are bigger than the average so space is a consideration. When they go on holiday, they take a small cat tray. It’s a doddle for Daisy as it’s about an inch off the ground. Enry’s big fluffy bum fills it – so no sharing then. But he’s a big softy and she’s the boss. They work it out.
